Cadence and Organizational Build-out

Cadence and Organizational Build-out designs two things every scaling company needs: a business and functional meeting cadence that keeps execution on track, and an organizational structure with the right people in the right seats.

What is a business operating cadence?

Definition: Business operating cadence. The scheduled set of meetings a company runs on: a weekly leadership meeting, functional or department meetings, quarterly planning sessions, and an annual planning session. Each one has a defined purpose, attendee list, and agenda.

ANNUALQUARTERLYWEEKLY
  1. Daily huddles (stand-ups) Every day

A short stand-up at the center of the rhythm, for teams that need a quick daily sync. Optional.

  2. Weekly leadership meeting Every week

Same agenda every week: scorecard, priorities, headlines, to-dos, and most of the time spent solving issues.

  3. Quarterly planning Every 90 days

Review the last 90 days, reset priorities for the next 90, and solve the biggest open issues.

  4. Annual planning Once a year

Revisit the long-term vision, set one-year goals and measurables, and build the first quarter’s priorities.

The operating cadence: daily huddles (optional) at the bullseye, inside a weekly leadership meeting, inside quarterly planning, inside annual planning.

What is a Right People, Right Seats assessment?

A Right People, Right Seats assessment checks two things for every key role: whether the person shares the company's core values (right person), and whether they understand the role, want it, and have the capacity to do it well (right seat).

Definition: Right People, Right Seats. A people framework in which "right people" share the company's core values and "right seats" are roles each person understands, wants, and has the capacity to perform. Structure is designed first; people are placed second.

Right person shares the core values.

Right seat gets it, wants it, and has the capacity to do it.

Right person, wrong seat

Find them a seat that fits.

Right person, right seat

The goal for every key seat.

Wrong person, wrong seat

Make the change.

Right seat, wrong person

Values come first. Address it.

Right People, Right Seats: every key role is checked for values fit (right person) and role fit (right seat).
  • A players: huge immediate value adds.

  • B players: keep the bus moving.

  • C players: drag everyone down.
